We investigate, research, experiment and develop sustainable crops, trees and fauna including domesticated livestock that will benefit the community’s subsistence nature, its environment and its economic base in the local and international market place.

The Ministry’s Research Division’s field extension service is still located in Totokoitu in the Vaka of Takitumu in the village of Titikaveka, while its laboratory and administration service has been re-located to Nikao village of the Vaka district of Te Au o Tonga. It is expected the Research Station will be re-located to an Outer Islands some time in the near future.

1. Nursery Activities

  • Propagation of Various Fruit Tree Species and Varieties such as; Citrus, Mangoes, Avocados, Macadamia, Litchis, Annonas, Passionfruit, and Bananas for sale to the general public for commercial and subsistence use.
  • Propagation of Fruit, Vegetable; and Root Crops for research and trial purpose.

The Crop Research division is responsible for continued research into suitable crop, fruits and exotic plants that will grow prolifically in country according to its micro climate and environment. Most importantly staple foods such as new varieties of taro, sweet yams, bananas, vegetables and others.

Dr Poeschko has dedicated her career here in the Cook Islands to the detection, prevention, eradication/reduction of pests and diseases that affect all manners of plant and fauna within the Cook Islands.
