National Census of Agriculture and Fisheries PDF Print E-mail

The National Census of Agriculture and Fisheries was held in conjunction with the National Census on Population and Dwelling with the official day on 1 December 2011.  This was a joint venture with the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Statistics Office.  It is hoped that the partnership will not only help strengthen working partnerships but also the data and information system of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Training of Supervisors and Enumerators were conducted a couple of months before the exercise.  A Northern Group Charter was undertaken with National Project Coordinator, Mr. William Wigmore on board along with another staff member conducting training and doing the Census for Palmerston and Nassau islands respectively.

The last Census conducted for Agriculture and Fisheries was done in 2000 and is well overdue.  It is hoped that the report will be done by June 2012. - Policy and Projects

Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods Programme PDF Print E-mail

Background

1. The proposal for a Regional Programme for Food Security (RPFS) in the Pacific Island Countries was tabled at the Fourth FAO Meeting of South West Pacific Ministers of Agriculture in Vanuatu in 2001. Following a FAO preparation mission in 2002, and a financial commitment by the Italian government of USD 4.5 million, the RPFS commenced in 2004 as a pilot phase. Additional support was provided by FAO through its regular programme, including the Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) and the South-South Cooperation (SSC) programme. The programme goal of improving national and regional food security was to be achieved through the implementation of both national and regional projects which had been outlined during the preparation.
